Bread with smalec and a dill pickle

The simplest Polish snack: fresh bread, dripping with crackling, and a dill pickle. With a beer, round a bonfire or on a cold evening.

  • Serves 2
  • Prep 5 min

Ingredients

  • 1 jar of smalec with crackling (200 g)
  • fresh rye or sourdough bread
  • 2 or 3 dill pickles (ogórki kiszone)
  • salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • chives or onion (optional)

Method

  1. Take the smalec out of the fridge 15 minutes ahead, so it spreads easily.
  2. Cut the bread into thick slices.
  3. Spread it thickly with smalec and sprinkle with salt and pepper, and chives or finely chopped onion if you like.
  4. Serve with the pickles, cut lengthways.
